The CD starts with an "Feloldódva partmenti párában", an airy dialogue between guitars and soprano sax. The double bass only adds some distinct accents. Almost a Scandinavian ambiance.
The very short "Reggeli kotyogó", is the perfect wake-up call. A nervous interaction between sax and guitars: the spontaneous energy of jazz.
"Útravalóság" has the bass clarinet setting the theme. Double bass and the electric guitars are floating around it and from the middle part towards almost the end there seems to be an impetuous discussion between bass and guitars. In the last minute it seems they found acquiescence.
"Bódé ladikokkal" sounds like a lament with bowed double bass, the deep sound of the bass clarinet and intelligent coloring by the acoustic guitars.
"Nádszálkák" starts as a joyful play between bass clarinet and double bass. The guitars and electronic effects give the song its extra depth. At the end the tenor saxophone and effects sound like a church bell on a misty Sunday morning.
"Bólyatánc" demonstrates the playful movements of a floating navigation marker. The processed electric guitars and tenor saxophone are building a climax. The double bass is giving the music extra immersion.
"Matróz bók" has an unruly double bass line with a rocky electric guitar floating around. The sax is distorted into a trumpet.
I wonder what was the compliment.
"Malőr" is a short track with eruptions on sax and electric guitars.
"Vizenjárás" sounds like a delicate Gershwin tune.
All tunes are full of striking images. In "Kőgát sirállyal" you see the seagull frolicking around, in "Damil" the float from the fishing line is drifting on the water, in "Kompkürt" you are alerted by the horn and the melancholic "Pislákoló túlparti" brings you in a misty ambiance.
"Éjszakai evezős" is chamber music at its best and sometimes it reminds me of King Crimson. Very much that mood.
"Hold híd" is rather ceremonial with minimalistic playing: less is more.
"Folyami zene", the title track, and "Araszoló hajóvonta" are drifting on delicate soundscapes from guitars, double bass and horn.
"Merülés", is soprano sax improvising on a minimal double bass and guitars fundament.
This album is a celebration of true musicianship. The quartet doesn’t play one redundant note and has the ability to get you in the mood. This is one I definitely take to my deserted island.
